Title:
I
Want to be Free
Author:
Joseph Slate
Illustrator:
E.B. Lewis
ISBN: 9780399243424
Summary:
An escaped slave runs from his master and finds love in
the strangest place.
Rating:
Fantastic
book, I have to admit though; I am partial
to this type of Historical fiction. I
love this time period. There is so much
change and struggle in the period. So many
life lessons can be taught and learned.

Reading:
I
would probably use this as a read aloud.
It could be used also in small groups.
You could give each group a different book from the period and have each
group report on each book. This would
create a great discussion on the topic for a whole class group. Either way it would be very affective.
Writing and Speaking:
The students would
write a reflection on each book they read in their small groups.
