Title:
The
One and Only Ivan
Author:
Katherine Applegate
Illustrator:
Patricia Casteleo
ISBN: 9780061992254
Summary:
Ivan
the one and only silverback is stuck in a cage all day with no other
gorillas. Mack is the owner who runs the
mall where Ivan can be seen every day.
There are also other animals there.
With the daily number of visitors dropping, the struggles for the
animals only begin. With the arrival of
a new baby elephant Ruby, many new challenges arise. This book is inspired by true events.
Rating:
This
is a cute, cute book. It would be a
great first novel for any student who likes animals. It is told from the point of view of
Ivan. The book is thick, but the
chapters are super short and would give the students a feeling of accomplishment
as they read. This would also be a great
guided reading book.

Reading:
This
would be a great book for guided reading groups or as a read aloud. If used as a read aloud you could stop along
the way to check for comprehension.
Writing and Speaking:
The students could do
research on other animals in zoo’s and present them to the class.
