Fantastic book,  I have to admit though; I am partial to this type of Historical fiction.  I love this time period.  There is so much change and struggle in the period.  So many life lessons can be taught and learned.

I would probably use this as a read aloud.  It could be used also in small groups.  You could give each group a different book from the period and have each group report on each book.  This would create a great discussion on the topic for a whole class group.  Either way it would be very affective.

The students would write a reflection on each book they read in their small groups.

Rating:

I need to be completely honest, here.   I got this book simply because of the cover.  I was not expecting it to be a poem; however, it is a great book.  The illustrations by Bryan Collier really bring the book to life.

Reading:

After reading the book aloud I would have the students write or tell about a time they felt left out by adults.  I would have the students draw a picture of a time they felt left out and a picture of when they felt proud. 

 

Writing and Speaking:

The students would then create their own poem in the form of Rap, Song, drawing, Musical beat, Dance, etc.  The conclusion to the lesson would be a whole class rap of Langston’s poem.

 

Additional uses:

This is a great book to integrate in Social Studies and a great way to intergrate the time period of the book with music from the period.  There is nothing like some great Jazz by Duke Ellington or Miles Davis.

This could also be integrated into the Social Studies unit.  I would also do an activity in class about basket weaving.  I would have a speaker come to class from different cultures, but specifically from the Gullah Culture if studying SC History.
