Fantastic book,  I have to admit though; I am partial to this type of Historical fiction.  I love this time period.  There is so much change and struggle in the period.  So many life lessons can be taught and learned.

I would probably use this as a read aloud.  It could be used also in small groups.  You could give each group a different book from the period and have each group report on each book.  This would create a great discussion on the topic for a whole class group.  Either way it would be very affective.

The students would write a reflection on each book they read in their small groups.

Summary: 

This is a non-fiction story.  This is a true story of friendship and survival after Hurricane Katrina.  After the storm Bob the dog and Bob cat were left because their family couldn’t take them when the family was rescued.  This left the two to survive on their own.  They never went anywhere without each other, and Bob the dog protected Bob cat at every turn.  Do they get rescued?

Rating:

The book is a great way to introduce students to non-fiction.  This gives students many different ways to look at friendship, survival, and triumph.

I would use this book to introduce the genre of non-fiction.  I would use this as a read aloud book.  I would incorporate some activities about not being able to see and the struggles that can create. 

 

Writing and Speaking:

Students could do research on Hurricane Katrina, friendship or blindness.  Students could write a letter to the two Bobbies.  Students could talk about the animal rights, human rights, etc. 

 

 

Additional uses:

This could also be integrated into the Science weather unit.

Thunder Rose

Title:  Thunder Rose

Summary: 

Rose unique from birth, accomplishes some amazing things during her life.  She is great with making things out of metal, calming a charging herd of cattle, and many more amazing things.

Rating:

This is a cute fiction book.  It is short enough to keep the students interested, but no to long for the tall tales to get drawn out.  There is enough action for the boys and enough inspiration from Rose for the girls.  It is just a cute but odd little book.
