Pete for President

Title:  Pete for President

Author:   Daisy Alberto

Illustrator:  n/a

ISBN: 9780060263850

Summary:   Pete and Joey are best friends until they both decide to run for class president in the third grade.  They soon discover it takes more than speeches, posters, and promises to win an election.

Rating:  I would have the class talk about the President of the United States, what their role is, past presidents, and how we decide who the president is. Students would then write a short essay titled “What if you were president of the classroom?”  After everyone shares their stories we would have a classroom election.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Title:  Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Author: The Brothers Grimm

Illustrator:  n/a

ISBN: 9780735822573

Summary:   Snow White is a beautiful princess and her evil stepmother can't help but be jealous of her.  She wants to be the most beautiful in the land.  She sends a huntsman in the wood with Snow White to kill her and he tricks the queen into thinking he had until she asks her magic mirror.  She goes to great lengths to kill Snow White so that she is the most beautiful.

Rating:  While this definitely isn't the Disney version I do feel that it would be a good book to use in the classroom to show comparison writing.  If used with other versions of the story it shows the students that while they may be similar each author has their own spin on things and their own writing style.

Summary:   This book is not just a book about the game basketball, but this book describes every motion of the game.  What if feels like to be the game.

Rating:  I love, love, love this book.  This would be a great book to be used as a read aloud on descriptive language.  Not to mention, a book the boys will truly enjoy.  I may also use this in a project where the students get to research their favorite sport and write a story like Hoops about their sport.
